Highway Drainage
Drainage is an important element of the highway. Without adequate
drainage system in place, the highway could flood or even freeze during cold
weather conditions. Normally surface water (rain water) runoff the roads and pavements
drain into adjacent road gullies which are situated within the highway. It is sometimes connected to the public sewer (responsibility of the water company) or its own
separate highway drainage system normally responsibility of the local highway authority.
In rural areas, road drainage usually drains into nearby localised drainage
ditches. To ensure good drainage flow in rural area and reduce risk of road
flooding, drainage improvements carried out by the local or highway authorities
and landowners also knows as riparian owners.
