Don’t leave your house drain cover exposed, like the one in the picture. You are more likely to entertain vermin like rats and mouse into the drain and it’s more than a health issue. Once these creatures enter the drainage system they are become extremely difficult to remove. It can also cause further problem if they enter the drain pipe and into the house.

It is advisable to keep exposed drain covered at all times and keep the vermin out.

As the nation will celebrate festive Christmas, the householders will carelessly pour over 500 tonnes of cooking oils and fats, roasting juices including left over veg and meat bits down the plughole.

It's all too easy – simply rinse the fat and oil from the greasy pots and pans down the sink with soap and hot water. Most householders might not think twice before dumping fat, oil and grease down the drain.

As soon as fat cools, it will thicken eventually causes a blockage. It will eventually cause waste water (foul) and sewage to back up. The sewer blockages will be caused by grease, fat or oil solidifying in drains and sewers forming 'fatbergs'. Add to more, hair, soap, scum we will also wash down the drain.

The best way to get rid of used cooking oil and fat – pour it into a container. Let it cool, scrape it out into a sealed bag and put it in the bin. Always try to recycle greasy leftovers by mixing the fat with nuts and seeds, allowing it to solidify. Then using this feed the birds in your garden. Otherwise pour surplus oil and fat away into the soil in your garden. Never pour it down the drain.

Usually there are around 200,000 sewer blockages in Christmas throughout the UK every year. Three quarters of them are caused by oils, fat and grease clogging up drain pipes. Clearing these blockages could cost in millions of pounds year.
